New Year, New Stories: January at Words, Wine & Wit
There’s something about the first weeks of a new year that feels a bit like opening a fresh notebook: crisp, hopeful and full of possibility (even if I’ve already spilled tea on mine). After a whirlwind end to 2025, I’m easing into January with a slower pace, a big mug of something warm, and a book that’s been on my list for far too long: Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell.
What We’re Reading This Month: Hamnet
Our January pick is tender, lyrical and quietly devastating in all the ways O’Farrell does best. Perfect book club energy.
We’ll be meeting on 30th January at The Old Bicycle Shop in Cambridge, and I can’t wait to hear everyone’s thoughts - whether you’ve devoured it in a weekend or are still lingering over the opening chapters. There’s no wrong way to read with us.
Looking Ahead: February’s Read‑Along for Slags
Next month, we’re doing something a little different - an organised read‑along for Slags by Emma Jane Unsworth. I’ve been working behind the scenes with HarperFiction to get copies sent out to those who signed up, and the excitement is already bubbling.
We’ll have:
an Instagram group chat
reading prompts
discussion questions
and plenty of space to share favourite lines, reactions and everything in between
It feels like the perfect way to shake off the winter slump and dive into something bold, funny and sharp‑edged together. If you would like to request your ✨ FREE ✨ copy, check out the link below.
A Little Life Update
I always try to keep this space honest, so here’s the truth: the end of last year knocked me sideways. Between a family bereavement and my partner’s car accident, December felt like a month I was just trying to survive rather than savour. He’s recovering well (thankfully), but it’s been a reminder to slow down, breathe, and lean into the things that make life feel full: community, creativity and connection.
Which is why I’m extra grateful for this book club. For the messages, the check‑ins, the laughter at meetings, the way you all show up for each other. It’s more than a reading group; it’s a little ecosystem of kindness.
What I’m Hoping for in 2026
More joy. More books. More gatherings that end with someone saying, “I didn’t expect to love that as much as I did.”
More space for rest.
More space for fun.
And maybe (just maybe) fewer misplaced phones.
Thank you for being here, for reading with me, and for making this community what it is. Whether you’re joining us for Hamnet, Slags or something later in the year, there’s always a seat for you.
Here’s to a year of stories worth sharing.
See you soon, book lovers.
